British Steel gives full-time roles to 37 apprentices

British Steel has given full-time positions to 37 apprentices following the completion of their training.

The company’s new employees, who specialise in either mechanical, fabrication and welding, or electrical engineering, received the news after completing a three-year apprenticeship with the business. 23 of the apprentices are based at British Steel’s headquarters in Scunthorpe, with 14 at its operations in Teesside and Skinningrove.

In Scunthorpe, British Steel’s apprentices spend a year in the training centre to teach them basic skills before they spend two years on site with craftspeople, gaining hands-on experience and putting those skills into practice. In the second year, their placements are split into two 6-month segments in different areas, followed by a 12-month placement in the department where they will likely get their full-time role.

In Teesside, the apprentices arrive at British Steel having gained a year’s worth of experience with Middlesbrough College and Teesside Training Enterprise (TTE). Their first year at British Steel involves them working in combination with TTE, before getting experience on site in specific areas in their second and third years.

Matt Stockwell, operations director at British Steel, said: “I congratulate the apprentices for their achievements and hard work during the last three years. We welcome them into their permanent positions. I am sure they will be major assets to our business, and I wish them every success.

Heather Bateman, early careers advisor at British Steel, added: “It is fantastic to see so many young people entering the business and completing their apprenticeships. These apprentices are the future of our business, and it is wonderful to see them achieve their goals. We look forward to seeing how their careers develop as they progress with British Steel. They all have a superb opportunity.”
