56 new apprentices launch careers at British Steel
More than 50 apprentices are launching their careers with British Steel this month as the company builds the next generation of steelmakers.
Of the new starters, 30 will work at its manufacturing headquarters in Scunthorpe, having joined in electrical, mechanical, fabrication and welding roles.
At British Steel’s operations in Teesside and Skinningrove, 14 new apprentices are embarking on their studies, while 12 technical and functional apprentices will also join the business shortly. Together, the 56 apprentices are the first to join Britain’s only primary steelmaker in three years.

Allan Bell, British Steel’s interim chief executive, said: “We are delighted to be welcoming our new apprentices into the business. They are an important part of our future as they are our next generation of engineers, technical, and functional experts. Alongside our highly skilled colleagues, they will help support our journey to becoming a sustainable and profitable business at the heart of the UK economy, and I wish them every success.”
Training for the Scunthorpe apprentices will be delivered by expert tutors from CATCH and follow a flexible delivery model, enabling the apprentices to learn their trades both on-site at British Steel and at the Stallingborough-based CATCH facility.
British Steel’s Teesside and Skinningrove apprentices will study at Middlesbrough College and get first-hand experience working at the company’s northern mills.
Over the course of their training programmes, the new starters will work towards a National Apprenticeship while earning a competitive salary.
