Feature: New Accu brass threaded inserts provide endless possibilities in plastic

Accu, one of the UK’s leading precision engineering component distributors, has introduced Brass Threaded Inserts to its range, which will open up new opportunities for designers and engineers, particularly those working in plastic prototyping and 3D printing.

Brass Threaded Inserts are small, cylindrical components that feature internal threading, which are specifically designed to be embedded into softer materials, like thermoplastics.  Their main purpose is to create a robust and permanent threaded connection, allowing for the secure fastening of precision screws, without compromising the integrity of the parent material.  This is particularly relevant to applications where repeated assembly and disassembly are necessary.

Yasin Boulakhras, Accu’s global head of product strategy, explains: “We introduced this range in response to customer demand from industries such as consumer electronics, automotive and 3D printing.  Often plastic threads do not withstand repeated fastener installation, whereas our Brass Threaded Inserts can offer this, allowing for greater flexibility in design, as well as improved load bearing capabilities.

“The importance of Brass Threaded Inserts in modern manufacturing cannot be overstated. Not only do they improve the integrity of 3D printed parts but also boost the durability of everything from prototypes to production assemblies. These important advantages mean businesses can ensure their products meet the highest standards of quality and reliability.”

Manufactured from high quality brass, the new Accu inserts provide excellent mechanical strength for enhanced durability of the end product. They also provide strong resistance to corrosion, making them ideal for applications which could be exposed to moisture or chemicals.

As a material, brass has the ability to conduct heat effectively, which aids the heat-setting process, ensuring a strong bond with thermoplastics. In addition, the external ridges and knurls of the inserts ensure they remain securely in place once embedded, which minimises the risk of stripping threads.

Accu provides a range of metric sizes, accommodating various thread specifications from M3 to M6. Insert depths range from 5.8mm to 12.7mm, with recommended hole size varying between 4mm and 8mm, according to the insert dimensions.  This flexibility allows for precise fitting in different projects, ensuring optimal performance.

Brass Threaded Inserts are typically heated and pressed into a pre-drilled hole in the thermoplastic material.  This method, known as heat-setting, allows the surrounding plastic to liquefy, which enables the insert to embed securely.  Once cooled, the insert forms a solid anchor point for screws, enhancing the overall strength of the assembly.

In addition, Accu provides bespoke manufacture of Brass Threaded Inserts to meet customer specifications through its state-of-the-art facilities, which specialise in both small batch prototyping and large-scale manufacture.

Accu’s introduction of Brass Threaded Inserts to its portfolio of products marks a significant advancement in the area of 3D printing and prototyping. With their robust properties, suitability to a wide range of applications and ease of installation, these Brass Threaded Inserts provide an effective solution for industries requiring reliable fastening mechanisms.  The integration of these innovative components in many industries will play a crucial role in enhancing product durability and performance.
