Rolls-Royce Trent XWB reaches 20 million flying hours milestone

Rolls-Royce’s Trent XWB family has accumulated more than 20 million engine flying hours, reaching the milestone in record time. Following its entry into service in 2015, the Trent XWB has reached this landmark by flying more than 400 million passengers under Trent XWB power – and powering nine of the top ten airlines, as voted for by travellers around the world.

Designed, engineered, and optimised to meet the increasing demands of aviation, the Trent XWB boasts a 99.9% engine dispatch reliability rate.

Built to last with an ever-improving time on wing, engines are capable of flying a distance equivalent to more than 500 circumnavigations of the globe between overhauls. A bestseller over recent years, the Trent XWB has a growing order book of more than 2,600 engines.

The Trent XWB is the most efficient large aero-engine in service today. The engine has a 15 per cent fuel consumption advantage over previous generation Trent engines, goes further on less fuel, and is bolstered by its capability to fly on sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs).

Rolls-Royce says it is investing over £1bn to deliver a series of upgrades for its new-generation Trent engines, enhancing their efficiency and durability, and taking the Trent XWB to a new level of performance.

A suite of technologies will deliver an additional 1% improvement in fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions for the Trent XWB-84, and further improve the engine’s reliability and durability. The Trent XWB-97 is receiving a series of technology packages that will improve durability across all operations, as well as doubling time on wing.
