Geopura signs hydrogen deal for landmark Yorkshire site

Clean fuel pioneer Hygen Energy has signed a landmark offtake agreement with hydrogen power leader GeoPura in a boost for the company’s West Yorkshire energy hub.

Hygen, one of the clean energy portfolio companies owned by entrepreneur Jo Bamford CBE and part of the HydraB Group, is the lead developer of the Bradford Low Carbon Hydrogen site, which is due to come on stream in 2028.

With construction giant JCB and zero-emission bus manufacturer Wrightbus already signed up to take hydrogen from the site, GeoPura’s addition continues the forward momentum in transforming a landmark of Bradford’s energy heritage into a hub for the future.

The facility will produce up to 15 tonnes of hydrogen per day using renewable electricity to power a 35MW alkaline electrolyser. GeoPura has agreed to take 15% of the available hydrogen in the first year, upping its commitment to 20% from year two onwards.

Recently merged with Ballard Power Systems, a global leader in hydrogen fuel cell technology, GeoPura designs, manufactures, and operates its category-defining Hydrogen Power Unit (HPU), which offers clean, off-grid power. Its systems convert hydrogen into clean electricity, with zero harmful emissions. GeoPura also produces green hydrogen via electrolysis at its own dedicated production facilities across the UK, transporting the fuel with the UK’s largest compressed hydrogen distribution fleet.

As the largest project to secure funding through the UK government’s first Hydrogen Allocation Round, Bradford Low Carbon Hydrogen is a model for the UK’s clean energy transition, supporting Bradford’s ambition to be a net zero city by 2038.

Steven Hardman, head of power at the HydraB Group, said attracting big-name businesses to the project proved that hydrogen had a vital role to play in the UK’s energy mix: “There is still much work to do before construction begins, but we are at advanced stages of this project and, as such, this is an important and exciting milestone.

“As lead developer on the project, Hygen has a deep commitment to this site. It remains a strategically important location for hydrogen production in the heart of Bradford, and our appetite to see it realised is as strong as ever. With GeoPura joining up with fellow offtakers JCB, Wrightbus and Ryze Power, we know there is a strong appetite for hydrogen in the UK.”

Andy Cunningham, president of Ballard, added: “We’re excited to work with Hygen and secure an additional long-term supply of green hydrogen to fuel our growing fleet of HPUs. Demand for reliable, clean power is growing across long-term infrastructure programmes and grid-constrained sites, including multi-megawatt data centre projects, where access to electricity can determine how quickly investment becomes reality.

“Our customers need confidence in both their power supply and the fuel behind it. This agreement helps us build that confidence, connecting UK-produced green hydrogen with projects that need dependable electricity and giving us a stronger foundation to scale.”

The hydrogen will be available at an on-site refuelling station or delivered directly to local businesses, helping to replace diesel and natural gas, cut emissions, and improve air quality.

Developing a domestic green hydrogen supply also supports the UK’s energy security at a critical time for infrastructure delivery. Producing fuel closer to where it is needed can help reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels and build resilience against fuel price volatility and wider economic instability. By connecting new production with committed customers, projects such as Bradford help establish the dependable fuel supply needed to power essential infrastructure and support industrial growth.
