GE Aerospace Prestwick site set for £63m expansion

A total of £63m will be invested in GE Aerospace’s Prestwick site, a landmark project set to expand and modernise operations and create around 150 skilled jobs in Ayrshire over the next five years.

GE is investing £30m in the expansion, which will enhance its engine maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) operations and establish a new 55,000 sq ft building at its Prestwick site.

The investment will help improve site layout, logistics, access and operational flow, creating the capacity needed to support future demand. The project is being delivered on an accelerated schedule, with full operations targeted for Q1 2028.

The project is backed by a planned £6m investment from Scottish Enterprise, alongside a £27m support package via the Ayrshire Growth Deal – a regional investment partnership between the Scottish Government, the UK Government and South Ayrshire Council.

Andy Prow, site leader at GE Aerospace in Prestwick, said: “This investment reflects GE Aerospace’s commitment to our customers and to the future of our Prestwick site. By expanding and modernising the facility with the help of the Scottish Government and partners, we are improving capacity, operational flow and readiness for future demand, while helping hire and train additional workers from the area.”

Alongside its expansion investment, GE Aerospace is addressing the critical skills shortage in high-tech industries by investing in the development of local aerospace skills. A donation of £75,000 to Ayrshire College will help fund new training equipment for students and apprentices, as well as the delivery of a course designed to prepare students for careers in the wider aerospace industry.

Deputy First Minister Jenny Gilruth welcomed the news during a visit to the facility, calling it “a major vote of confidence in Scotland, our workforce and our aerospace sector.”

She added: “Prestwick is one of Scotland’s most significant aerospace assets. This announcement demonstrates what can be achieved when the public and private sectors work together with a shared focus on economic growth, investment and job creation.”
