British Steel seeks more than 40 new apprentices and graduates
British Steel is recruiting more than 40 new apprentices and graduates for 2027, offering candidates the opportunity to launch a career with one of the UK’s largest steelmaking companies.
The announcement follows significant investment in early careers talent in 2026, when the business welcomed 70 new apprentices alongside the successful relaunch of its graduate recruitment programme, which welcomed its first cohort since 2022.
Applications for the company’s 2027 intake are now open, with positions available at British Steel’s Scunthorpe, Teesside, and Skinningrove sites.
The new apprenticeship opportunities, which start in early September 2027, include: 12 electrical apprenticeships and 12 mechanical apprenticeships in Scunthorpe, and eight electrical apprenticeships and eight mechanical apprenticeships across its Northern Mills in Teesside and Skinningrove.
British Steel’s apprenticeship programme combines hands-on experience with fully funded training and nationally recognised qualifications. Successful candidates will begin with specialist training before moving into operational areas of the business, where they will work alongside experienced colleagues and develop the skills needed to support steelmaking operations.

Graduate positions for 2027 are available in: Manufacturing operations, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and materials engineering (quality and process). Additional opportunities across other business functions will be released in the coming weeks.
Whether starting through an apprenticeship or as a graduate, recruits will work on live projects while developing essential technical and professional skills. British Steel aims to offer permanent employment upon completion of the programmes.
Nick Ashton, HR Director at British Steel, said: “The steel industry offers a huge variety of career opportunities, and we’re committed to helping people develop the skills and confidence they need to build successful and rewarding careers.
“Investing in future talent is essential to the long-term success of our business and we’re proud to continue creating opportunities for young people in the communities that have supported British Steel for generations, from Scunthorpe to Teesside and Skinningrove.
“Many of our colleagues began their careers through apprenticeship and graduate programmes and have gone on to hold key roles across the organisation. We want to attract ambitious people who are eager to learn, develop their skills and play a part in the future of British Steel.”
Apprenticeship applications close on 8 March 2027, while graduate applications close on 26 February 2027. To find out more and apply, visit the website.
