50 leaders in engineering elected to Academy Fellowship

Fifty of the UK’s top engineers have been elected as Fellows of the Royal Academy of Engineering, in a stellar list that includes some of the world’s leading innovators and business people.

The 50 new Fellows will be formally admitted to the Academy at its AGM in London today, in addition to two new International Fellows and one Honorary Fellow, who will add their expertise to the Fellowship of 1,500 world-leading engineers from both industry and academia.

The new Fellows include engineers at the cutting edge of modern technology, such as Dr Caroline Hargrove of McLaren Applied Technologies – a pioneer of human-machine interaction who has developed applications from motor racing to medical services. Dr Demis Hassabis of DeepMind, one of the world’s leading AI research pioneers, joins the Fellowship in recognition of his work on deep neural networks, recently culminating in AlphaGo, the first program to beat a professional Go player.

In addition to Dr Hassabis, who won an Academy Silver Medal in 2016, several other Academy award winners are honoured in the list including Dr Eben Upton CBE, who led the team behind the low cost Raspberry Pi computer which this year won the £50,000 MacRobert Award, the leading award for UK engineering innovation. Dr Pavel Matousek, of 2014 MacRobert Award winners Cobalt Light Systems, is also elected to the Fellowship for his work on non-invasive chemical analysis that has seen liquid security scanners deployed in over 75 airports around the world.

Industry leaders joining the Fellowship include Professor Juergen Maier, Chief Executive of Siemens UK and Ireland; BP’s Chief Scientist Dr Dame Angela Strank DBE and Dr Andrew Palmer CMG, CEO of Aston Martin Lagonda.

World-leading engineering researchers also make the list, including Professor Sir Martyn Poliakoff CBE FRS, who will be as familiar to the millions of YouTube viewers who watch his online chemistry videos as he will be to the chemists and engineers who follow his work on applications for supercritical fluids, based at the University of Nottingham. He joins the University of Oxford’s Professor Eleanor Stride, who is leading ground-breaking work to deliver cancer therapy drugs directly to the site of tumours inside tiny bubbles controlled using ultrasound.

The Academy recognises John Hennessy of Stanford University and Chad Holliday of Royal Dutch Shell as International Fellows, in recognition of their outstanding international engineering achievements.

David Gammon, CEO and founder of Rockspring, is awarded an Honorary Fellowship after years of committed support for UK tech entrepreneurship, including through the Academy’s Enterprise Hub. As a co-founder of the Academy’s Launchpad Competition, David’s support has helped ambitious engineering entrepreneurs achieve commercial success, and provided Hub members with advice and connections with world-industry leaders.

Professor Dame Ann Dowling OM DBE FREng FRS, President of the Royal Academy of Engineering, said: “Since 130 engineers were first called together in 1976 to form the Fellowship of Engineering, our Fellows have come together to advance and promote excellence in engineering.  I’m so proud to welcome our new Fellows, who represent the very best of UK engineering. From technology giants to our universities’ finest minds, our new Fellows demonstrate how engineering is tackling some of the biggest challenges facing the world.  I look forward to working with them as we continue to make the UK a leading nation for engineering innovation and businesses.”
