Latest outstanding manufacturing apprentice recognised

Congratulations to Jacob Upton of Northamptonshire based Variohm EuroSensor, winner of the UK Manufacturing Apprentice of August. Jacob picks up this months prize to go with the £100 Amazon Vouchers.

Jacob not only wins this month’s accolade but also now qualifies for the AMI UK Manufacturing Apprentice of the year. The competition has been launched to find and recognise the very best apprentices currently working within the UK manufacturing industry.

On learning he had won August’s award, Jacob said, ‘I am over the moon that I have won and I would like to thank the whole of Variohm for supporting me during my apprenticeship. I thoroughly enjoy working at Variohm and everyday produces new challenges that test me and help me expand my knowledge even more. I cannot wait to continue gaining qualifications whilst also gaining valuable experience in the workplace.’

Jacob started working at Variohm in August 2016 so it is timely his recognition is exactly 2 years to the date. He is due to finish his Level 3 BTEC in Mechanical Engineering within the next few months. With a top grade of Distinction in every subject so far & only 1 project outstanding before receiving his final grade, there is no doubt in his successful completion of the qualification.

Variohm believe they offer apprentices opportunities that they may not receive elsewhere. They put Jacob forward for ‘UK Manufacturing Apprentice of 2018’ due to his hard work and dedication since starting with the company and believe he deserves to be rewarded for his hard work.

Richard Kelley, Manufacturing Manager said: “Jacob has demonstrated he is capable of maintaining exceptionally high standards of work both at college and here at Variohm.  He is now fully integrated into the Engineering resource here and is proving to be a hardworking and dependable part of our team.  I have been impressed with Jacob’s work quality and attention to detail, and this award is well deserved in recognition of all his hard work”.

Jacob has been the Project Manager of ‘Project 3002’, which was an internal development project to create a piece of tooling equipment used in the Production Department to aid in cutting down labour times and increasing the accuracy of the calibration process. He designed this using CAD Software and manufactured (through hand fabrication/ Rapid Prototyping methods) nearly all of the components that went into the Final Assembly, which is not only a personal accomplishment but it also recognised as a companywide accomplishment and something he can see in use every day.
