Polestar celebrates first anniversary of its Coventry R&D Centre

Polestar Automotive UK has celebrated its first anniversary as part of the Swedish electric performance brand’s global research and development team. Formed in May 2019, the UK arm of Polestar’s R&D team has now more than doubled in size to 125 employees. As Polestar’s model range grows with the introduction of Polestar 2 later this summer, so too will the UK R&D department.

Based in Coventry, Polestar Automotive UK draws on the region’s rich history of producing some of the most talented engineers the country can offer. With a workforce comprising widespread talent as young as just 22, Polestar Automotive UK has a diverse range of employees with backgrounds ranging from high-volume passenger cars to specialist motorsport applications.

The UK team concentrates on body and trim, chassis, electrical integration and vehicle attributes, though Polestar Automotive UK also hosts a variety of manufacturing and purchasing staff besides its engineering specialists.

Working directly with the Polestar R&D team in Sweden, the UK engineers are contributing towards the work on future Polestar models beyond Polestar 3. By using state of the art virtual reality systems they can communicate in real time with engineers in Sweden to develop future models quickly and efficiently.

Ian Collins, responsible for research and development at Polestar UK, said: “I’m immensely proud of what the UK team has achieved over the last 12 months. Being part of a fast-moving organisation like Polestar brings many challenges, but helping to develop its future range is a dream come true. While our one year anniversary is important, and worth celebrating, it’s the future of this Swedish performance electric brand that is the most exciting.”
