Clearly Drinks begins production on new canning line

Clearly Drinks has begun production on a new canning line at its factory in Sunderland, capable of producing 160 million cans per annum. The new line follows a recent investment announcement by the company in which it stated its intention to diversify its portfolio beyond PET and glass.

The substantial investment to install the line at Clearly Drinks builds upon growth over the last 18 months and enables the company to continue to innovate and evolve. BW Integrated Systems has supplied the new soft drinks canning facility, which is capable of producing 500 cans per minute and 30,000 cans per hour.

One of the first products off the canning line will be Northumbria Spring – pure British spring water – launching in a new 330ml can format. It will be available in both still and sparkling, singles and a 6-multipack. The new canned Northumbria Spring water offers a more sustainable alternative to glass and PET bottled water, with new innovative technology to keep it tasting fresh once opened.

Mick Howard, chief executive officer at Clearly Drinks, said: “Securing this investment for our new canning facility here at our Clearly Drinks factory in Sunderland allows us to really diversify our offering and develop our product lines. The investment is an extremely agile operation, specifically designed for flexibility, giving the customer multi can size and packaging formats of choice.

“We now have Northumbria Spring off the line which will be launching into Booker very soon and we’ll start production with our consumer brand Upstream immediately which has recently relaunched with three new adventurous flavours and bold new packaging design and will be available in Morrisons and BP. The machinery’s speed and efficiency will allow us to also manufacture other contract pack products and develop further opportunities with other brands which we’ll announce in due course.”

Looking to the future, plans for the company include expanding its brand portfolio, offering high flexibility for product and packaging, whilst opening opportunities with new well-known customers.
