Video: Developing new human-robot solutions for industrial manufacturing

A collaborative project is developing new human-robot solutions for industrial manufacturing.

The SYMPLEXITY project aims to develop new possibilities for working environments for human and robot collaboration for industrial polishing.

In nearly every sector of industrial manufacturing, polishing techniques are used. But often manual polishing is the only option because the tasks are too complex to be automated. SYMPLEXITY is a 4-year project aimed at improving how humans and robots collaborate, specifically in the area of industrial polishing.

Polishing is a largely manual and time-consuming process, often inaccurate when assessing the amount and duration of pressure applied to different areas of large surfaces. Manufacturing applications that produce mold tool parts for injection moldings such as car bumpers, grills, engine components, phone cases, etc. rely on human skills for surface finishing.

A consortium of 15 partners, including Autodesk, end-users, universities, integrators and polishing experts have come together to develop a solution that will free people from repetitive, labour-intensive work and shift their skills to become more productive in smart factory of the future. SYMPLEXITY combines robotics, polishing and digital inspection to provide increased productivity, reduced repetitive strain injuries and improved human focus on higher value tasks.

SYMPLEXITY closes the gap between the highly automated production processes and the manual polishing of complex geometries by creating a safe environment of collaboration between the robot and the human worker.

To ensure relevance to European industry and practical use of the proposed objectives, SYMPLEXITY is strongly driven by end-users from different industries, including; automotive, medical, tool and die making.
