We are currently recruiting for a Head of Metallurgy for our client based in Wednesbury, the role will be carrying out metallurgical testing in accordance with the companies System Test Procedures, subject to the necessary training and pass off for competency. Duties include the following:

Main Duties:

Responsible for work schedules, ensuring these are fully in line with customer demands, allocating these plans to the team and monitoring and evaluating at regular intervals; taking appropriate corrective action as necessary
Plan, implement and deliver the quarterly, monthly, weekly and daily deliverables for the department against agreed objectives; reporting on these weekly and monthly – Balance service delivery with cost to serve, remaining commercially focused at all times
Overseeing the approved Contract Review process ensuring all new jobs are booked in accurately and in a timely manner
Hold regular effective team meetings, fostering employee engagement and the forum for continuous improvement
Ensuring that the development and drafting of new documented test methods are initiated in line with agreed practices following discussion and agreement with the Operations Managers where appropriate
Responsibility for sub-contracting any metallurgical testing requirements, with customers authorization to ‘Approved’ laboratories. Ensuring clients’/customers’ service levels are not adversely affected and high levels of customer experience prevail, oversee end to end process in its entirely
Ensure the production, approval, authorization and periodic formal review, (every two years) of any documented test methods/work Instruction within your area which already exists or are required in the future. Forwarding new Test Methods/Work Instructions or changes required to existing Test Methods/Work Instructions to the Quality Manager for document control and issue
Working with the Quality Manager, ensure a high level of response to customer needs (in line with KPI’s) is achieved and liaise with the Quality manager to ensure procedures are revised in line with the latest issues of test standards
Ensure all MI is trusted/clean data and then lead on the interrogation of all that is available, to identifying opportunities to improve performance so new product development initiatives/service delivery we give our customers and clients may be developed
Ensure technologists and technicians are fully aware of the contents, and know where to locate a current approved and authorised controlled copy of the documented management system, and that they understand the management policy and adhere to the documented management system at all times
Ensure the accurate monitoring of equipment (maintenance/calibration) is in line with agreed procedures at all times
In line with agreed KPI’s, ensure that full calibration records are in place and are in line with current certification/calibration instructions including acceptance criteria
Maintain physical condition of the department and associated areas by planning and implementing new design layouts; inspecting equipment; issuing work orders for repair and requisitions for replacement as appropriate.
Working with the senior teams, developing the services of the department, keeping up to date with latest industry trends, and working with marketing and sales to increase our client base as appropriate
Carry out test method modification, development and validation of new methods in accordance with the documented management system
Ensure only competent and approved staff are carrying out tests and authorizing/ interpreting test reports
Monitoring, tracking and actioning (within an agreed period of time), efficient and effective corrective actions and/or preventive actions as a result of first, second or third-party audits re the management system in line with business needs
Ensure at all times that training records for staff in your department are in the correct format, are maintained up to date and authorized. Training matrices should be clearly displayed in respective work area
Consider risk and opportunities associated with laboratory activities, identifying areas for improvement and implementing any necessary actions
At all times, act confidentially and impartially in accordance with the laboratories documented management system
Ensure the Management System procedures are implemented to maximise operating efficiency. Establish and maintain internal controls to safeguard quality standards
Adopt safe working practices in line with current Company procedures and to undertake appropriate training in Health and Safety. Takes ownership for the departments Health and Safety, contributing to meetings and ensures operation is compliant. – Ensure GDPR/data protection guidelines are adhered to at all times (personal and staff)
Ensure you and all members of your team fully engage in the performance management/appraisal process and have a personal current up to date Development Plan in operation at all times so that appropriate learning and development activities are undertaken for the role – Coach members of the team, living out the RO group values
Through a skilled team, ensure we deliver a consistently high standard of experience for our customers by building, maintaining & championing a culture of customer focus across the site and ensuring all resources are utilized effectively and costs controlled within the departmental budget against operational plans.
